Between 65-80% of our denture patients have stomatitis (inflammation of the mouth) caused by Candida albicans and Candida glabrata. Other pathogens present on dentures are implicated in respiratory and GI infections.  Dentures carry high levels of many infectious organisms and denture wearing is associated with increased risk of several systemic diseases including COPD (emphysema and chronic bronchitis) heart diseases, atherosclerosis, hypertension and diabetes. The elimination of microbial pathogens on dentures is very important. Research suggests that patients need to do a better job at cleaning dentures on a daily basis. Soaking dentures in cleansers, although important, is not enough. Daily soaking in a recommended cleaner then brushing with a denture brush and anti bacterial soap is essential. Ultrasonic cleaning of your dentures by your dental professional on a yearly basis is also very important.

Unclean dentures are a chronic source of potentially harmful bacteria and fungi that may be associated with oral and systemic diseases. As mentioned dentures need to be cleaned daily with effective antimicrobial and antifungal agents but there comes a time when a denture can no longer be cleaned effectively and must be replaced. At a microscopic level denture are porous and serve as a perfect harbor for these pathogens. It’s not uncommon for patients to wear their dentures for ten, twenty, even thirty years and these dentures are most certainly a source for systemic health concerns. If you have concerns about the condition of your dentures see your dental professional today. Dental professionals play an important role in educating patients and helping them improve their oral and overall health.
