Although the younger age groups were the first to embrace the Internet, most of today’s growth is being driven by the older age groups, starting at age 55, according to a report by The Media Audit.
Statistics show that the senior demographic is the fastest growing group of all computer users. It is also statistically proven that the senior user spends more time on the computer per usage – in other words, they stay longer, read more. According to Media Metrix, compared to 18-24 year olds, seniors spend on average 6.3 more days per month on the Internet, stay logged on 235.7 minutes longer and view 178.7 more unique pages per month. They spend an average of 44-45 minutes per day on the web and that is not simply keeping in touch with friends and family. And they are most inclined to pass their findings along to others.
During a recent holiday shopping period, the average online shopper spent a total of $629, while shoppers aged 55+ spent $1,819, nearly 3 times the average (Source: Zona Research, Inc)
